THE Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Lagos, Mr Simeon Akpanudom, has warned youths to desist from cultism and criminality.
Akpanudom said involvement in cultism and criminality could destroy youths’ future and have negative consequences on their families and the nation.
The AIG gave the warning on Friday while speaking with journalists at the FCID premises in Lagos.
He said that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) had intensified its campaign against cultism, cybercrime and other forms of criminality, particularly among youths across the country.
The AIG also urged parents to guide their children and wards against criminal activities, stressing that youths had important roles to play in the development of the nation.
“Crime does not pay. Cultism can only lead to death. Other forms of vices will cut your life short and also affect your relatives and our nation,” he said.
Akpanudom said the police had deployed various strategies and specialised response units to tackle violent crimes, adding that the measures had recorded significant successes across the country.
He urged members of the public to continue to trust the police and provide useful information that could assist in preventing and combating crime.
“I want to encourage members of the public to keep trusting the police and report any form of suspicious movements, transactions or persons, so that these can be dealt with,” he said.
The AIG also warned individuals contemplating criminal activities to desist, stressing that there was no good time to commit crime.
“Crime does not pay. I discourage anyone thinking of committing crime because it is detrimental to individuals, families and society,” he said.
On a recent dismissal of four police officers over professional misconduct, Akpanudom said the NPF would not condone indiscipline among its personnel.
He said officers found culpable of misconduct would face appropriate sanctions, depending on the severity of the infraction.
“The NPF is a disciplined organisation, and there is no room for any form of misconduct,” he said.
Speaking on security preparations for the 2027 General Elections, the AIG said the police were already working with intelligence to strengthen their preparedness.
He said senior police officers were expected to meet in Imo from Sept. 21 to Sept. 23 to discuss preparations for the elections, including intelligence and security strategies.
Akpanudom assured Nigerians that the police were prepared to provide adequate security and enable citizens to go about their lawful activities without fear.
“We are good to go. The NPF is working seriously to make sure people go about their lawful businesses,” he said.
The AIG said collective vigilance and timely information remained critical to preventing crime and maintaining peace across the country. (NAN)
